Penny McLean studied at Edinburgh College of Art for four years in the 60's, specializing in drawing and painting. Following this she spent a further year at Manchester College of Art. After several years teaching art full time she went on to teach in adult education while at the same time developing her own work. From the late 70's she has helped to organize a very successful Art Loan Scheme in Wetherby, running two exhibitions a year. She has exhibited in mixed exhibitions in the Ferens Gallery, Hull, the Usher Gallery, Lincoln, the Art Gallery, Scarborough, and in galleries in Knaresborough and Harrogate and Malton. She has been Artist in Residence for many years at Burton Agness Hall, Bridlington, and has also taken part in the East Riding Open Studios for the past few years. She has also held a solo exhibition in Scunthorpe, and has paintings in private collections in England, France and Mallorca. Her painting style is strongly influenced by her early exposure to Scottish painting. She studied under Sir William Gillies and Sir Robin Phillipson, and has long admired the work of Joan Eardley. The Scottish Painters' love of colour, texture, expressive brushwork and the natural rhythms of the landscape is strongly reflected in her work.
